As a designer one of the questions I'm always asked from clients and friends is how they should decide on art for their homes. Art can be an intimidating purchase as it sets the tone for a room and can be costly. My advice is to purchase an artwork when you love it instinctually, even if you're not sure why. Thats not to say to buy impulsively. How we feel about an artwork is so subjective and can change with our circumstances. Think it over for at least a week and make sure you still feel the same way about the work. If you make the right decision, you could have it in hanging on your walls for many years to come.
When choosing the size of the art, consider the statement your hoping to make with the work and how it will sit on the wall with it's surroundings. An old trick is to stick the dimensions of the work on the wall using paper to help you visualise the scale. Hanging a mixture of mediums throughout your home is a great way to create interest. If you have paintings in the living room, perhaps some framed prints or photography in the next room will bring some diversity to your collection.
Lastly, have some fun with it! In my opinion, art should not be taken too seriously. Pick pieces that express who you are and that make you feel good. To get you started I've complied a list of my favourite art suppliers. With prices starting from as low as $8, they won't break the bank.
